Speech and language therapy for schools and education settings

Interactions provides specialist, school-based speech and language therapy across Leeds and the surrounding areas. We work with Early Years settings, primary and secondary schools, resource bases and multi-academy trusts.

Whatever the age of your pupils or the type of setting, we take time to understand what communication looks like in your classrooms and shape our support around the needs of your children and staff.

Speech and language therapy across different education settings

Speech, language and communication needs can affect learning, participation and relationships at every stage of education. Our approach remains consistent, but the support we provide reflects each pupil’s age, communication profile, curriculum and learning environment.

Early Years settings and nurseries

We work with school nurseries, private nurseries, children’s centres and other Early Years settings to understand emerging communication needs and build strong foundations for learning, play and interaction. Support is adapted to the child, the setting and the adults around them.

Primary schools

Communication underpins literacy, learning, friendships and participation throughout primary school. We help schools understand pupils’ needs and combine appropriate therapy with practical classroom strategies, staff guidance and support that carries over into the wider school day.

Secondary schools

As language and curriculum demands increase, communication needs can become harder to recognise and explain. We provide assessment, reports, intervention and staff support according to the needs of the pupil and setting, helping young people access learning and take a fuller part in school life.

Resource bases and specialist provision

Interactions works primarily with mainstream schools, including pupils supported within on-site resource bases, and also works with some specialist provision. We consider complex and overlapping needs carefully, while keeping Speech and Language Therapy expertise at the centre of our work.

Multi-academy trusts

Interactions currently works with individual schools within multi-academy trusts and can support several settings within the same trust. Each school’s provision remains responsive to its pupils, staff, priorities and existing support.

One service, shaped around your setting

These are not separate speech and language therapy packages. The needs of a child in nursery and a young person in Year 10 will naturally look different, but our starting point is the same: understand the individual, the setting and the barriers affecting their experience of education.

We then draw on assessment, intervention, classroom observation, staff support and professional advice to shape provision around the needs we identify.

Working with SENCOs, teachers and school leaders

Effective speech and language therapy depends on close collaboration with the people who know the pupils and the school best. We listen to different perspectives, share our professional judgement clearly and make recommendations that are realistic within a busy education setting.

Support for SENCOs

Your SENCO is usually our main day-to-day contact. We help to understand and manage SLCN caseloads, prioritise pupils, plan provision, contribute to EHCP processes and respond when a child’s needs or circumstances change.

Working with teachers and support staff

We translate specialist findings into practical strategies for real classrooms. Through clear plans, resources, modelling, coaching and training, we help staff support communication without adding unnecessary work to an already demanding role.

Supporting school and trust leaders

We help leaders understand the communication needs within their setting, decide where specialist input will be most useful and build staff confidence. Our advice is honest, evidence-based and grounded in a clear understanding of schools.
